What this overhaul really does is change classic gold wow from a game that is organized geographically, as a monumental odyssey by its numerous storied landmasses, to one that is organized chronologically. No, scratch that – narratively. WOW is no longer set over its whole history. It’s set over the last two years. You can choose out of that if you need, but the game as good as points out to you that you are bending the rules to achieve this and taking an unwarranted trip to the past. Why return?

There’s no reason to mind this. All that stuff is still there for you if you need it – indeed, so is the original, grueling grind through the older world, in the form of WOW Classic. Moment-to-moment, the game is a lot better for the fluctuations, especially for new players. A bewildering and intimidating creature of an MMO has become, if barely small, then seductively streamlined. For the first time in a long, long time, the peaks seem within reach in the foothills.

It is just odd, for me, a game I always felt was about its places has set its storyline integrity first. It’s odd to see 14 years’ worth of landscape and adventure – 14 years I lived and leveled, fought and walked – filed away where they won’t bother anybody unless they go searching. It is the right call, it just makes me wistful.

I’m definitely rolling another new character though.
