Rocket League is one of the most punishing esports in the world, and it is also one of the most popular. A single miscalculation can mean the difference between winning and losing a sporting event. In this article, I’ll show you the Dos and Don’ts of Rocket League play in order to help you improve your competitive consistency and overall performance.

Getting Things Started
Here’s a quick rundown of who I am and what I do:I’m a professional coach for GamersRdy and a competitive player for the company. Most of you may be familiar with my name because I scored the winning goal in Goal of the Year 2019. A quick shout out to GamersRdy, who published this piece; if you’re looking for 1-on-1 coaching from professionals, written guides, or even courses to enroll in, they’re the ones to contact. I’ll be correcting common mistakes from the five cornerstones of play: mechanics, positioning, rotations, decision making, and boost control, in order to cover a wide range of topics.

Mechanics is a branch of science that deals with mechanical systems.
We’ll start with the subject that everyone enjoys the most: mechanics. For the purposes of demonstration, the attacker in each of these situations possesses excellent mechanics and is capable of performing any routine that is possible in the given situation. However, just because something is possible does not imply that it should be done. Consider the following scenario: you’ve successfully thrown a ball up the wall while maintaining complete control. You are being pressured by one defender, while another is shadowing you from behind the backboard. What are you going to do?
Whatever you do, avoid aiming for the goal. The most important thing is to beat the person who is putting pressure on you and to keep control of the situation as a team. An example of this would be a free pass into the middle of the field, a boom to the other side, or an attempt to get past or win a 50/50 with the second defender. If you always try to score from a 1v2 situation where you don’t have complete control, you’ll lose possession more than half of the time when up against a competent defense. It simply isn’t worth it in the end. Rocket League is all about taking advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Consider all of the brilliant ideas you’ve missed out on because you were preoccupied with the desire to perform a solo show. Improve your mechanics in order to broaden your options rather than simply repeating the same routine over and over.

Controlling the Boost
Players simply do not know what to do when they are not in possession of the ball, which makes boost control one of the most easily mismanaged aspects of competitive 3v3 play. Some people find it extremely easy to drift into awkward positions as a result of the large number of convenient boost pads available, while others are simply unable to master the use of the small boost pads to rotate back and forth. Listed below are the two most important things you should avoid doing with your boost:Take your team’s back boost from a near post rotation unless you absolutely need to make a backboard play on the other end of the court. As a result, your team’s defense will suffer, and you’ll find yourself in exactly the same position as your man at the front post, resulting in low option coverage as a team and possibly even a double commit in the future.
And now for the unspoken rule: if you’re locked in defense, never give up your advantage by accepting the opponent’s back boost. Although it appears to be extremely convenient, this is the most detrimental abandonment of support you can provide to your teammates.
